The Wulff Ambush line has a condensed 20 foot head (chartreuse) and 70 foot running line (blue). The versatility of this line is incredible. Overhead casting is incredible with the ability to shoot a lot of line. The heavy front taper turns nymph setups over easily. The Ambush line also punches and turns over bulky dry flies fished in close from drift boats. You've never roll casted a line like this! Single hand spey casts are a breeze with enough weight in the D loop to load the rod well. Designed by Garry Sandstrom (Tacoma, WA) the Ambush line is revolutionizing the way people fish!
Official release from Wulff: Livingston Manor,Doug Cummings, President of Royal Wulff Products, has announced the introduction of the Ambush Triangle Taper fly line, a trout and steelhead line designed to roll cast easily with single handed rods. This decidedly Western-influenced fly line is joining a well-respected family of Triangle Taper fly lines designed by fly fishing legends Joan and Lee Wulff.Using some the of techniques of Western steelheading, (with a tip of the hat to the Brits), Royal Wulff Products set out to create an easy roll-casting line for the single-handed rod user who is looking for distance in close quarters. “Tight quarters require specialized equipment” says Cummings, son of Joan Wulff, “This line gives you the ‘reach’ you’d enjoy with Spey equipment- but using a traditional one-handed rod.”
The floating line is designed with an extremely short, 20-foot, weighted front end, which is marked by a color change in the line, from lime green to blue. This “change point” makes it easy for casters to see the right amount of line with which to cast for optimal results.Roll casting is thus visually aided and more intuitive for the single hander.Traditional casting using a backcast, or double-haul is greatly enhanced with this front-heavy line.
But, like all Triangle Taper Fly lines, the very front section is made with a continuous taper down to the tip, which creates a lighter delivery at the business end of the line.So while it blasts like a canon, it lands like a feather.
And while the front end is heavily weighted for roll casting, the running line is thin for easy shooting and mending. The Ambush uses J3 coating technology which is an integrated lubricant/floatant in the line to keep it high, dry, and slippery.
